Bruin Thinclads Headed for Nationals After Pac-10 Triumphs

The UCLA men’s and women’s track teams would like to repeat their double of last week in the NCAA championships Wednesday through Saturday at Baton Rouge, La.

The Bruins won Pacific-10 Conference championships last week at Corvallis, Ore., the men defeating runner-up Oregon, 176-108, and the women besting second-place USC, 121-107.

The UCLA teams also turned in another double at Corvallis. Gail Devers, who won four individual events and anchored both of UCLA’s winning relay teams, was named the meet’s outstanding female athlete. Bruin Jim Banich, winner of the shot put in 63-5 1/2 and the discus with a toss of 194-3, was the outstanding man.

Devers took individual firsts in the long jump in 21-10, the 100-meter dash in 11.17, the 200 in a personal best time of 22.71 and the 100 hurdles in 13.28.

Other wins by UCLA men were by Danny Everett in the 400 (45.52), Kevin Young in the 400 intermediate hurdles (50.06) and Henry Thomas in the 200 (a lifetime best of 20.24).
