Coast : Grunion Will Return to Beaches on Tuesday
Grunion, the small shiny fish that flop up onto Southern California beaches to spawn at regular intervals during the spring and summer, will start their June appearances after midnight Tuesday, a state Department of Fish and Game spokesman said.
While they are on the sand they may be captured, but only with bare hands and without implements such as nets or scoops, according to Warden Lt. Rod Simon. Also, he said, anyone 16 years or older must have a valid fishing license.
Other runs are expected from June 27 through 30, July 12 through 15, July 27 through 30 and Aug. 11 through 14.
Fish and Game spokesman Pat Moore said there is no way to predict which beaches the grunion will choose for their brief visits, but generally they show up on relatively quiet, dark or moderately lighted shores. Successful catches have been made on the Orange County coast at such places as Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, parts of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Doheny State Beach in Dana Point.
