Law enforcement chiefs from nine Western nations held talks in Paris in an effort to coordinate the fight against terrorism across Western Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. Attorney General Edwin Meese III represented Washington, and French officials said it was the first time that European officials had extended cross-border security efforts beyond the Continent. British Home Secretary Douglas Hurd hailed “a new link in cooperation against terrorism. There was a gap which will now be filled.”
