Plane Lands in Red Square, Witness Says
A single-engine plane landed in Red Square on Thursday night, shocking more than 300 onlookers and a handful of militiamen and Kremlin guards, a witness said.
The plane’s pilot, who told the crowd he was an engineer from Hamburg, West Germany, managed to sign a few autographs before being arrested along with his female companion, the witness said.
The white plane, which appeared to be a U.S.-made Cessna, remained on the famous cobblestoned square near St. Basil’s cathedral after midnight.
There are no known reports of an aircraft ever landing in Red Square. It was not immediately clear where the plane flew from.
