THE GOOD BOOK ON GENESIS

Share

I must say I was surprised by Robert Hilburn’s review of the Genesis concert at Dodger Stadium May 22 (“Genesis Strikes Out in Center Field,” May 25): He managed to finish it without once mentioning Bruce Springsteen or Prince.

If Hilburn found the concert less interesting than groundskeepers unrolling a tarp, I suggest he was not paying proper attention to the performance (too busy thinking up cute put-downs, more than likely).

He says Genesis’ music is insignificant and doesn’t document our times. . . . I suppose “The Last Domino,” a song that warns against nuclear war, is insignificant in nature. Plus, if all Hilburn heard was a beer commercial when they played “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight,” then that is his own fault. I heard a desperate song about a man in the agonies of a drug addiction, pleading to be released.

I had a great time watching a first-rate performance by a very talented group of men.

No art form can touch a mind that has closed itself off. Tell Hilburn to quit being so negative about everything except his own personal favorites. And next time he reviews a concert, it would be nice to include things like musicianship, quality of the singer, overall presentation, etc.
