The Education Department announced grants of almost $7.1 million for programs to promote the leadership skills of principals, superintendents and other school administrators. The grants will average about $141,000 for technical assistance and training centers in 49 states and the District of Columbia, said Education Secretary William J. Bennett. (Indiana has not yet completed the process to establish a center.) Bennett said that about half the nation’s principals and a large number of superintendents are expected to retire in the next few years.
