Leaders of seven small eastern Caribbean countries, all former or current British possessions, have voted to form a single nation and have called for referendums to approve a union. “By coming together, our people will feel as if they belong to a nation of significance in the world,” St. Lucia Prime Minister John G.M. Compton said. The decision to consolidate was made by the prime ministers of Montserrat, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts-Nevis, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The countries have a combined population of about 520,000 and a total gross domestic product of about $620 million.
