Air Force and Navy fighters intercepted four Soviet bombers operating off Alaska’s coast. Navy F-14s met two TU-95H bombers about 350 miles southwest of Adak Island in the Aleutians, Lt. Col. Ted Tilma of the Alaskan Air Command said. While the Navy jets were accompanying that Soviet flight, two Air Force F-15s intercepted two more of the big bombers about 100 miles north of Narter Island, in extreme northeastern Alaska. The Soviet aircraft never penetrated U.S. airspace, Tilma said. The intercepts brought to 12 the number of such actions this year, he said.
