Share

Com Systems, a Van Nuys long-distance phone company, reported a 17% jump in earnings to $533,000, or 12 cents a share, for its first quarter ended March 31. In last year’s first quarter, the company’s profit was $455,000, or 10 cents a share.

First-quarter revenue climbed by 48% to $9 million.

Com Systems has been suffering from severe financial difficulties as it competes for business customers with much larger long-distance companies such as AT&T;, MCI and US Sprint. But in the past year, Com Systems has bought several smaller long-distance companies, which appear to have helped boost Com Systems’ results.
