Fernald School
How sad! The Times reported (May 20) that UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young responded to the vigorous protests of students and faculty of the College of Fine Arts and “backed off” from his decision to disband the college. Yet he adamantly refuses to reconsider his decision to close the Fernald School at UCLA despite the entreaties of the students and faculty of the Fernald School as well as a resolution supported by at least four UC Regents and a unanimous resolution of both houses of the California Legislature that he keep the school open.
Why is art more important to UCLA than the education of children with learning disabilities? Will no one in the UC system champion the cause of these needy children who deserve to be helped? What are the priorities of UCLA Chancellor Young?
