University of Miami officials said they are reviewing academic records of all student-athletes for the last three years in the aftermath of the disclosure that a 1984 starting defensive back was academically ineligible.

The review was prompted by a Miami News report that Hurricane football player Darrell Fullington played the entire 1984 season while on academic probation. The probation should have precluded his competing in intercollegiate athletics under university rules, according to Miami Vice Provost James Ash Jr.

Ash said Fullington was erroneously certified as eligible to play because of an “arithmetical error” made when someone tabulated Fullington’s grade-point average incorrectly on a work sheet. He said the university now uses a computer for those calculations, “so the problem is solved.”

Ash at first had blamed the error on the athletic department but later said those computations had been made “by the athletic department and the registrar’s office working together.”
