Nonaligned Nations Meet on 3rd World News Reporting
Representatives from members of the 101-nation Nonaligned Movement gathered here Sunday for a five-day conference that will focus on ways to reduce the dependence of Third World countries on the West for news, organizers said.
Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Nathan Shamuyarira said the Second Conference of Ministers of Information of Nonaligned Countries opening today will discuss ways of objectively reporting international issues such as the situation in southern Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
Most nonaligned countries reportedly seek to establish greater exchanges of news among members and loosen their dependence on Western media. At least 50 ministers from underdeveloped countries are expected to attend, Shamuyarira said. Media experts from nonaligned nations will also attend.
The Nonaligned Movement says it espouses policies independent of either Soviet or U.S. influence. The first nonaligned conference on the media was held in Indonesia in 1984.
