An Israeli military court sentenced a U.S. professor to a two-month suspended jail term and a fine of $1,000 for joining a protest on the occupied West Bank. Roger Heacock, 45, of Philadelphia, who teaches history at Birzeit University on the West Bank, alleged that he was singled out for arrest after criticizing the Israeli army’s response to earlier demonstrations. The prosecution charged that on Feb. 16, Heacock led a march by about 40 Palestinian women in Ramallah protesting the bombing of Palestinian refugee camps near Beirut. Heacock maintained that he merely stopped to read the protest signs while out grocery shopping.
