Sudan’s Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi told Parliament that Islamic Sharia law will be revised with legislation exempting non-Muslims from Islamic punishment. New rules for domestic banking and for financial dealings with foreign countries also will be submitted to Parliament, Mahdi said. Introduction of Islamic law by ousted President Jaafar Numeiri in 1985 swelled the ranks of anti-government rebels in the mostly Christian south. Such Islamic punishment as public flogging and the cutting off of hands also triggered an outcry among human rights advocates.
