Italy’s Christian Democrats appear to be heading for a major defeat in the country’s June 14-15 election and are trailing the Communists, according to the latest opinion poll. The survey, in the newspaper La Repubblica, showed support for the traditionally dominant Christian Democrats at 26.4%, down 6.5 points from the last general election in 1983. It put support for the Communists at 27.9%, a drop of two points from their 1983 results. The Socialists polled 11.1%, just below their 1983 returns.
