SAD TONY AWARDS

”. . . and now a few million more words from our sponsors. . . .”

How much lower could the Tony Awards sink (“A British Night at the Tonys,” by Dan Sullivan and Clarke Taylor, June 9)? It seemed toward the end of the show that there was an award and then a commercial.

As far as quality is concerned, I can remember when the Tonys were one of the best awards shows on the air. The producers would have been better off to cancel the show and notify the “Les Miserables” company that they won.

What a sad commentary on Broadway the Tonys were. It does no good to recall the good old days. The Tonys reflect the bitter condition in which Broadway finds itself. It may also be that Broadway is another victim of our preoccupation with the profit rather than the product. Or, as someone else has said, the profit has become the product in contemporary American society.
