Secrest Regains Lead on 4th Day of Cycling Race

Michael Secrest of Flint, Mich. regained the lead after the fourth day of the Race Across America, a 3,100-mile cycling race from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

Secrest arrived at 2:30 p.m. (PDT) at the checkpoint in Steamboat Springs, Colo., which is at the race’s 1,200-mile mark.

Secrest had lost his lead on Monday to Franz Spilauer after passing a checkpoint near Provo, Utah, at the 928-mile mark of the race. In second place Tuesday night was Bob Forney of Evergreen, Colo., who arrived at the checkpoint at 6:15 p.m.

Casey Patterson of Topanga led the women. She arrived at 3:10 p.m. at the checkpoint at Roosevelt, Utah. The checkpoint is just less than 1,000 miles from the start.

Cheryl Marek of Seattle, Wash., was in second place, about two hours behind Marek.

Spilauer from Vienna, Austria, was in third place, arriving at the checkpoint at 6:33. In fourth place was Rob Templin of San Diego, about six hours behind the leader. The men will reach highest elevation tonight when they ride through Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet.
