Puerto Rico May Try to Extradite Bob Knight
Puerto Rico may try to extradite Indiana basketball Coach Bob Knight to serve a six-month jail sentence for punching a policeman during the 1979 Pan American Games, a government official said Wednesday.
Acting Justice Secretary Guillermo Mojica Maldonado said: “I will recommend that Knight be extradited.”
Knight, who coached the U.S. team to the gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games, was convicted in absentia in San Juan District Court of punching a Puerto Rican policeman. Maldonado said he would make the recommendation Monday to Puerto Rico’s justice secretary, Hector Rivera Cruz, when Cruz returns to the island, a U.S. Commonwealth.
Maldonado said that Knight was found guilty of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor, and that Knight was sentenced to a six-month jail term.
