The World : U.S. Envoy Faces Ejection

Panama’s Legislative Assembly voted to declare U.S. Ambassador Arthur Davis persona non grata to protest what the 39 lawmakers charged was American intervention in Panama’s affairs. The resolution must be formally approved by the nation’s executive branch before Davis can be expelled. Several legislators charged that the United States and Davis were behind weeklong protests earlier this month against the government. In Washington, a State Department spokeswoman declined to comment. Last week, the U.S. Senate adopted a resolution urging the suspension of Panama’s leader, Brig. Gen. Manuel A. Noriega, pending an impartial investigation into allegations of murder, election fraud and corruption.
