CCC Program

Share

The overcrowding in the Central Jail again points up the need for starting the CCC program to get 40% unemployed youth of our asphalt jungles into meaningful work in our national parks and forests.

It is evident that we cannot build prisons fast enough to accommodate the young criminals we are producing. The old federal Civilian Conservation Corps trained many of our county firemen. Director William Penn Mott of the National Park Service was once a CCC boy. The city has a CCC program but cannot handle all those who would like to be in it. The state has a YCC program, which has about 2,000 young men and women, but here again it is not enough. I think it would be cheaper to let the Army handle the problem as it did before than to keep trying to build more prisons.
