A C-130 Hercules cargo plane skimming the ground in a daredevil demonstration crashed and burst into flames today, killing five people and narrowly missing a grandstand full of horrified civilian spectators.

Three of the six Air Force crewmen were killed immediately in the crash, a fourth died later in a hospital, and a soldier on the ground who was taking part in the routine capability demonstration also died, said Capt. Brian Irving at Pope Air Force Base. The condition of the two other crewmen rushed by helicopter to hospitals was not immediately disclosed.
