Ford Foundation to Base New Asian Office in Beijing
The Ford Foundation reached agreement today to base a field office in Beijing, its first new office in Asia since 1971, its president announced.
“China’s increasing engagement with the outside world and the growth of the foundation’s program there now make it timely and appropriate for us to have a staff resident in Beijing,” foundation President Franklin A. Thomas said in a statement.
According to Thomas, an agreement approving the new office was signed by foundation board Chairman Alexander Heard and Hu Sheng, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Peter F. Geithner, a 19-year employee of the foundation, will staff the new office, which is to open sometime this year, Thomas said. Since 1979, the foundation has provided Chinese organizations with $14 million for training, research and analysis in economics, law and international affairs, he added.
