The World : Canada Mail Strike Settled
A tentative settlement halted a three-week postal strike in Canada, and the 20,000-member Letter Carriers’ Union appeared to win the battle over concessions that state-owned Canada Post was seeking to trim its losses. Federal mediator William Kelly hammered out the accord during a fourth straight all-night bargaining session. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the settlement and said mail delivery should be back to normal by Monday. Not all the terms were disclosed pending ratification, but union President Robert McGarry said his members will retain the same protection against layoffs and non-union contractors that they had in the old contract.
