Supporters of the outlawed Irish Republican Army hurled firebombs at police, and Protestant youths--banned from staging a parade through a Roman Catholic neighborhood in Northern Ireland--went on a rampage, stoning officers. The clashes occurred in the Protestant town of Portadown, 30 miles south of Belfast, in connection with a Protestant parade commemorating a 17th-Century victory over Catholic forces. About 250 Catholic youths attacked police before the march. Afterward, Protestant youths pulled down part of a barrier set up to prevent the marchers from entering the Catholic area. No serious injuries were reported.
