Zambia Barge Sinks; 323 Lost

MANSA, Zambia —
A crowded river barge hit a rock and sank today, drowning 23 people and leaving more than 300 missing and feared dead, the Zambian news agency ZANA reported.
It said the vessel went down in the Luapula River in northern Zambia. Police Cmdr. Baldwin Kaila said 23 bodies had been recovered and about 80 people had swum ashore from the barge, which carried more than 400 passengers. Rescue efforts were continuing.
