Canadian Base in W. Germany Bombed
Saboteurs broke into a Canadian military base Monday, planting and triggering a remote-controlled bomb which injured one fireman and caused damage estimated at more than $1 million, a spokesman said.
Two armored ammunition carriers were gutted as the explosion ripped through the base’s fuel storage compound, burning 10 tons of gasoline and oil.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
The blast was set off in the early morning hours on the airstrip of the Lahr base.
The spokesman and police in nearby Stuttgart said an electrical wire was found at the site of the attack. It led to an adjacent highway through a hole made in the wire fencing, and police suspect that the saboteurs detonated the device from a car.
