President Miguel de la Madrid of Mexico has ordered the firings of about 150 customs service officers in an attempt to put a dent in illegal bribe-taking along the border, according to a Houston Post report quoting Mexico’s consul general here.

The Post reported that starting Monday, De la Madrid is expected to visit several border cities--including Tijuana, Nogales, Piedras Negras and Matamoros--to observe how his campaign against corruption is progressing. The fired officials are being replaced with academy-trained personnel, the paper quoted Consul General Hermilo Lopez Bassols as saying.
