In an effort to lure more farm workers across the border, an umbrella group formed by four of California’s largest farm organizations announced plans to open a public information and legalization processing center in Mexicali, Mexico. Wayne Smith, general manager of the Alien Legalization for Agriculture in Calexico, said the group has obtained preliminary clearance from the U.S. State Department and the Mexican Department of Labor. The center, which will include a 10-member staff in Mexicali and cost in “six figures,” will be the first of its kind in Mexico, Smith said.
