The Soviet Union has conducted its 10th underground nuclear explosion since the Kremlin abandoned a unilateral testing ban last December. The blast, with a yield of up to 20 kilotons, was conducted in the Yakut autonomous region, an area in Siberia rich in gold and diamonds. A kiloton is equivalent to 1,000 tons of TNT. Tass, the official Soviet news agency, said the explosion “was made in the interests of the people’s economy,” an indication it was for non-military purposes.
