Thunderstorms cut across the middle of the country, with wind gusts exceeding 80 m.p.h. in Iowa, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes from Milwaukee to St. Louis and Louisville, Ky. The temperature at Greensburg, Kan., shot up from 75 degrees to 95 within about 10 minutes in the morning, then settled back to 86. Almost six inches of rain fell overnight in the St. Louis area, and Iowa also was hard hit by the storms. Tornadoes hit in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
