An Oakland judge held Boston Celtic center Robert Parish in contempt and fined him $5,000 for failing to appear at hearings concerning child-support payments.

Parish has a 5-year-old son living in San Leandro, Calif., and the dispute centered on whether he had been making adequate payments. He told Alameda County Superior Court Judge Alice Sullivan he failed to appear for the hearings because he could not have left the Celtics at the time.

The judge told him to resolve the dispute with his son’s mother by August.
