A Lesson in Humility and Courage

Share

Michael Long was a student in my 5th-6th grade combination gifted classroom for two years. His personal tragedy (“Grandmother’s Not There for Graduation, Special Boy Puts Tragedy Behind Him,” June 28) has touched us all deeply.

The fine and sensitive manner in which the Los Angeles Times handled the story about Michael’s tragedy is to be commended. This young man has had more than his share of pain in his 12 years. Both the print and television coverage were handled so as not to add stress to an already painful situation.

We are especially grateful for the Michael Long Scholarship Fund. Many thanks to those persons who have contributed.

On his last day in my classroom, Michael said, “Mrs. Hampton, you have always been there when I needed help.”

This is a rare and sensitive young human being. He has taught us all a lesson in humility, courage, forgiveness, understanding and friendship.

Many thanks. You have enriched my life.
