A bill of 28 international bands are scheduled for East Berlin’s official Rock Summer festival beginning today as part of the city’s 750th anniversary celebrations. The official news agency said the six-day festival, the city’s fourth, would attract up to 20,000 fans each day on a specially named Island of Youth on the River Spree. Last month, three days of concerts in West Berlin by rock giants David Bowie, Genesis and the Eurythmics led to street fights in the eastern half of the city after police prevented youths from getting close to the Berlin Wall to listen.
