The Atlanta branch of the NAACP demanded Monday that radio talk show host Ed Tyll be fired for calling Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) a moron and comparing him to Buckwheat of the “Our Gang” comedies on a show last Friday. Tyll, who is white, made the remark about the black congressman following an exchange with Sen. Wyche Fowler Jr. (D-Ga.)--one day after Lewis was interviewed on Tyll’s afternoon program on WGST. After refusing to allow Fowler to finish a point on the Iran-c ontra hearings, Tyll said: “I can’t stand illiterates. I am not going to stand here and talk to a moron like John Lewis. I am not going to stand here and have Wyche Fowler or Ronald Reagan or . . . anybody tell me how to do the show. Nobody is going to do that. And I don’t care who it upsets.” Tyll was suspended for a week without pay for the remark, made Friday. Although the NAACP wants Tyll fired for his remarks, Lewis said he didn’t want to make an issue of it.
