The U.S. swim team finished strongly at the World University Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, winning three gold medals on the final day. That gave the Americans 30 medals in the pool events, including 9 gold, more than any other country. Romania was second with 11 total and 7 gold.

In the overall medal count, the Soviet Union has 45, including 15 gold, and the United States has 36 medals, 13 gold. Romania also has 13 gold medals, 31 overall.

American gold medalists Tuesday were won by Tom Williams in the men’s 50-meter freestyle, Alex Mlawsky in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle, and the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay team, which broke the Games record. Mary O’Leary of Tucson, Ariz., Lisa Meyers of Mission Viejo, Cheryl Kriegsman of Los Angeles and Mitzi Kremer of Titusville, Fla., combined for a time of 8:09.52, breaking the record of 8:20.51, set in 1985 by the Soviet Union.

American runners also added gold medals Tuesday with Lee McCrae of Pittsburgh winning the men’s 100-meter dash and Gwen Torrence of Decatur, Ga., winning the women’s 100. Also in women’s track, Patty Murray of Park Ridge, Ill., won the 10,000 meters.

Guard Troy Lewis of Purdue sank a three-point shot with 50 seconds to play to break an 81-81 tie and put the United States on its way to an 88-81 victory over Brazil in basketball.
