Contract talks broke off between the U.S. Postal Service and negotiators representing 578,000 postal workers, reportedly over a tentative settlement the Postal Service reached a day earlier with the 50,000-member Mail Handlers Division of Laborers International Union. The American Postal Workers Union, which is bargaining jointly with the National Assn. of Letter Carriers, said the dispute, over whether the pact erodes job security for other postal workers, now will likely be resolved through binding arbitration.
