U.N. Official, Assad Confer in Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria —
A senior U.N. official met Syrian President Hafez Assad on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of convening an international Middle East peace conference.
The official Syrian news agency SANA said Assad’s talks with U.N. envoy Marrack Goulding also covered the situation in Lebanon “in the light of Israel’s continued occupation of areas in southern Lebanon.”
