Japanese correspondents who have worked in Beirut called Thursday for the release of seven Western reporters held hostage in the country.

In an appeal published by the independent An Nahar and the leftist As Safir newspapers, 24 Japanese correspondents said they deeply sympathize with the hostages.

The Japanese said most foreign correspondents have fled the city because of the abduction of journalists and that “foreign journalists could no longer feel safe to work or live in Beirut.”

The appeal did not mention the other captives. A total of 25 foreigners are missing and believed held in Lebanon.
