Bush Backs Keeping Congress in Dark

Vice President George Bush on Thursday defended the Reagan Administration’s decision not to tell Congress about the Iran- contra initiative, saying “failing to tell the Congress is not a lie.”

Bush, in Vermont to attend a $500-a-plate fund-raiser for his unofficial campaign for the presidency, said also that he does not think any Administration officials will be indicted in connection with the affair.

When asked if the fact that President Reagan was never told of the diversion of funds to the contras indicated a lapse of management on Reagan’s part, Bush said: “You can’t win, can you?”

But Bush did not back Lt. Col. Oliver L. North’s efforts on behalf of the contras, saying: “I’d like to know more about it before I support it.”
