Cooler weather helped firefighters in seven Western states in their battle against forest and range fires that have killed three people, charred more than 100,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes. The worst of the fires burned out of control on Bland Mountain in southern Oregon, but officials were optimistic that the 840 firefighters battling the blaze were getting an upper hand. Meanwhile, 30 m.p.h. winds were fanning a new fire in Utah that had consumed more than 100 acres.
