An American woman working in a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon was wounded during clashes between Palestinian guerrillas and Shia Muslim militiamen, police said. Police gave her name as Barbara Pescani; the spelling, however, was a transliteration from police statements in Arabic. Officials said she was working for the World Council of Churches in the Miye ou Miye camp near Sidon when she was hit in the leg and abdomen by gunfire. The church group gathers and distributes aid to the needy in the Middle East and elsewhere.
