An auto industry watchdog group Sunday urged the government to recall all 1984 General Motors Pontiac Fieros because of engine fires that have occurred in one of every 900 of the cars sold.

The nonprofit Center for Auto Safety also called for a criminal investigation into a possible General Motors cover-up, saying the disappearance of files from a GM investigation into the Fiero fires appeared “far more convenient than credible.”

The center said nine injuries have resulted from the fires.
