Inglewood : School Budget Cuts Delayed
Facing a financial crisis, the school board discussed a proposal to cut $2 million from the district’s budget but took no action, saying further study and public comment are needed.
Officials say that a recent 10% teacher pay increase and the loss of state funds for urban schools will require widespread cuts in programs, supplies and staff. They say layoffs and further cuts may be likely before the Aug. 26 deadline for completing a budget estimated at $80 million.
At Tuesday’s five-hour meeting, board members directed officials to lessen their proposed reductions in administrative staff and textbooks in preparation for another budget session Monday, when some of the austerity measures may come to a vote.
