Ford pulled further ahead of General Motors as Detroit’s biggest moneymaker while GM’s industry sales lead declined further in second-quarter results reported today by the No. 1 and No. 2 auto makers.

General Motors Corp. said its second-quarter profit fell 3.7% to $980 million from $1.02 billion a year ago. Ford Motor Co. said its profit rose 39% to a record $1.5 billion from $1.1 billion a year ago. GM, which still sells the most cars, made less money than Ford last year for the first time since the 1920s.
