Nearly $1.5 million in public contributions have poured in to the Oliver North Legal Assistance Fund since the fired White House aide took the witness chair at the televised Iran- contra hearings, fund officials--all former classmates of North at Annapolis--said today.

North faces possible prosecution by Lawrence E. Walsh, the special prosecutor named to investigate the affair. North’s boss, former National Security Adviser John M. Poindexter, also was helped by his appearance before Congress, said a trustee for his legal defense fund who declined to say how much money had been contributed.
