Bernstine’s Agent, Chargers May Meet

The Chargers keep playing “telephone tag” with No. 1 pick Rod Bernstine’s agent, but negotiations are about to be done face to face.

Steve Ortmayer, the Chargers’ director of football operations, said Wednesday that Bernstine’s agent, Ralph Cindrich of Pittsburgh, is expected to fly to San Diego today.

Cindrich, reached at his home Wednesday night, said he’ll only fly out if Ortmayer is willing to negotiate around the clock.

Ortmayer, who said he wishes he could get Cindrich on the phone, said that, yes, he’s willing to work around the clock.

“I hope to have him (Bernstine) in camp,” Ortmayer said.

Bernstine, a 6-3, 235-pound tight end who may also get playing time at fullback, is currently working out with the Chargers here, but Cindrich says he’ll send him home to Houston if contract talks stall.
