An electrical blackout hit Tokyo on Thursday, stopping trains, trapping people in elevators and briefly halting financial trading.

Tokyo Electric Power said that an estimated one million households temporarily lost power when the blackout struck. The blackout was caused by excessive drain on the power supply from air conditioners as the city sweltered through its hottest day this year.

At the time of the power outage, just after 1 p.m. local time, the temperature in central Tokyo was 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
