A truck leaked thousands of gallons of nitric acid along a Texas highway, slightly injuring more than 50 people and causing acidic smoke to billow in red clouds around the vehicle.

About 1,350 of Azle’s 7,800 residents were evacuated for a time Thursday as the truck spewed the chemical along a five-mile stretch of roadway. Some of it spilled into a creek that flows into Eagle Mountain Lake, a water source for Azle and Fort Worth.
