It’s not unusual for a pecan tree to produce up to 500 pounds of nuts annually, and that’s enough to make 1,000 pecan pies, Georgia-Pacific Corp. says.

About 248 million pounds of nuts are harvested from pecan orchards in an average year, the forest products firm says. Although they are valued mainly for their fruit, pecan trees are also used to make furniture, flooring and boxes.
