Irvine-Based CIE Terminals Cuts Back on Work Force, Streamlines Management

CIE Terminals Inc., an Irvine-based arm of the giant Japanese trading company C.Itoh Ltd., said it has reduced its work force by 10% and streamlined its management structure to reflect lower-than-expected sales of its computer products.

The company, a member of C.Itoh’s U.S. electronics group, said John Knox resigned last week as vice president of marketing and will be replaced by Don Hazelton, whose position as vice president of sales is being eliminated in the reorganization.

Senior Vice President Harry Slam said about 14 of the company’s 140 Irvine employees have been laid off in recent weeks as the company consolidated sales, marketing and support operations.

Although CIE’s sales increased 15% in 1986 and have continued to grow at about the same rate, Slam said the company had projected a significantly higher rate of growth for 1987. When the anticipated sales failed to materialize, the company decided to consolidate.
